Designers: Sam Buck, Cassandra Jaimes, Phaathid Kenekeo
Project: In 2021 I was accepted into a graphic design internship for Saddleback College's award-winning literary journal, WALL, where I also served as Art Editor. Along with two other designers, I hand-selected the student-made art that would be accepted into the journal, laid out a 120+ page journal for digital and print publication, and worked with a third-party print shop to publish the journal.
Concept: This edition of the journal featured mostly art and writing created during the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. Many of the pieces processed this time period of great grief and upheaval through a very surrealist lens. The throughline of the edition of the journal ended up being the concept of transformation.  We tried to represent that through the journal literally transforming as you read. The pages are initially white and slowly become darker as the subject matter becomes darker. We also used a repeated visual motif of a labyrinth to represent the struggle of change.
Awards: The 2021 edition of WALL won multiple awards including first place in the American Scholastic Press Association's college magazine competition.
